Cannes Film Festival style at home

Cannes Film Festival, held annually in the French Riviera, is a key event for those interested in film, art and culture. It has championed the work of upcoming filmmakers ever since the 1940s when it was first known as the International Film Festival. In its early years just over 20 countries presented their films; fast forward to 2019 and that figure has soared to over a hundred. The selection panel travel the world to find the most promising directors, always on the lookout for new talent and original concepts.

There are several awards at Cannes, including ‘Un Certain Regard’ – an accolade presented to striking films with non-traditional plots – and the Palme d’Or, one of the most prestigious in the industry. ‘Blue Is The Warmest Colour’, ‘I, Daniel Blake’ and ‘Shoplifters’ are recent winners. The president of 2019’s jury was Mexican Director, Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The festival isn’t just an opportunity to enjoy films and soak up the sun: along with its rich cinematic history, Cannes is synonymous with red carpets, flashing lights and impeccably dressed guests. It’s the most exclusive of its kind; all events, with the exception of the Director’s Fortnight, are invitation-only. It’s also a networking event which buyers, producers, celebrities and distributors flock to every year. This elite status explains why such a strict dress code is in place.

We could devote tomes to the festival’s highlights throughout the years, but, instead, we decided to bring the topic closer to home and focus on Cannes style. Learn how to create a French Riviera-inspired scheme, influenced by daywear worn to the festival, and an interior that pays homage to the black tie and cocktail attire worn in the evening.

Cannes by day

The south of France has a lovely Mediterranean climate: you can expect ice-cream weather by mid-May. To keep cool, guests wear crisp cotton and lightweight linen in tailored or cropped styles. Emulate the fabrics and colours on parade by decorating your scheme with linen cushions in shades of ivory and off-white. For a pop of pattern, incorporate our Tikal Cushion Cover, a pale piece with a navy border, or items from our Roku Collection; each item in this range makes a statement with on-point Breton stripes – choose from five different yet harmonising designs.

Natural accessories – such as straw hats and leather sandals – are the perfect accompaniment to a light summer wardrobe. Follow suit and punctuate your scheme with rattan and wicker; place woven coasters on your coffee table or illuminate with lights and lanterns hand-crafted from organic materials. As for furniture, why not transform your garden with a ‘rattan’ lounge set, complete with white seat cushions?

Sunglasses, watches and jewellery smarten more relaxed apparel, and this can be reflected in your interiors too. A metallic accent here or there will draw the eye when paired with neutral-toned soft furnishings.

Cannes by night

As the evening draws in, boat shoes and sundresses are packed away in favour of formalwear. Everything from sequins to chiffon can be seen on the many red carpets rolled out during the festival.  Celebrities choose their couture gowns straight from the runway, opting for jaw-dropping innovations that make a statement. Many venues have spare black bow ties on hand should anyone forget and leave theirs at home, which is easily done considering how much guests have to bring. Every year, some of the leading film distribution companies host the most amazing movie-themed parties, which gives guests the opportunity to get creative with their choice of costume.

A glamorous living area can be created at the flash of a camera, whether you want to pay homage to the occasion or watch the festival’s highly anticipated films in an appropriately decorated room. Be bold and unroll a red rug with a plain or patterned surface. Alternatively, select furniture with opulent finishes like gold leaf and mirror glass. When it comes to accessories, velvet is a little heavy for a look that nods to southern France, which is why we’re casting our linen velvet blend cushion covers into the limelight. Our Taman and Halki Cushion Covers also fit the bill with their red detailing and ornate patterns.

We’re looking forward to this celebration of international cinema and can’t wait to read all about it.

We may not be basking in the rays, attending screenings or enjoying the glamorous parties and everything else that Cannes has to offer, but a few red-carpet worthy pieces around our homes will help us feel closer to the action.
